Friday of the Fifth week of Lent

Book of Jeremiah 20:10-13. 
I hear the whisperings of many: "Terror on every side! Denounce! let us denounce him!" All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine. "Perhaps he will be trapped; then we can prevail, and take our vengeance on him."
But the LORD is with me, like a mighty champion: my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph. In their failure they will be put to utter shame, to lasting, unforgettable confusion.
O LORD of hosts, you who test the just, who probe mind and heart, Let me witness the vengeance you take on them, for to you I have entrusted my cause.
Sing to the LORD, praise the LORD, For he has rescued the life of the poor from the power of the wicked!

The Jews picked up rocks to stone him.
Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of these are you trying to stone me?"
The Jews answered him, "We are not stoning you for a good work but for blasphemy. You, a man, are making yourself God."
Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, "You are gods"'?
If it calls them gods to whom the word of God came, and scripture cannot be set aside,
can you say that the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world blasphemes because I said, 'I am the Son of God'?
If I do not perform my Father's works, do not believe me;
but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize (and understand) that the Father is in me and I am in the Father."
(Then) they tried again to arrest him; but he escaped from their power.
He went back across the Jordan to the place where John first baptized, and there he remained.
Many came to him and said, "John performed no sign, but everything John said about this man was true."
And many there began to believe in him.

Christ gives his life for his enemies

Let us deeply consider the love of our Savior Christ who so «loved his own unto the end» (Jn 13,1) that for their sakes he willingly suffered that painful end, and therein declared the highest degree of love that can be. For, as he himself says: «A greater love no one has than to give his life for his friends» (Jn 15,13). This is indeed the greatest love that ever anyone had. But yet had our Savior a greater, for he gave his for both friend and foe.

But what a difference is there now, between this faithful love of his and other kinds of false and fickle love found in this wretched world... Who can in adversity be sure of many of his friends when our Savior himself was, at his capture, left alone and forsaken by his? When you go forth who will go with you? If you were a king would not all your realm send you on your way alone and then forget you? Will not your own family let you depart a naked, feeble soul, you know not whither?

Let us all in time, then, learn to love as we should, God above all things, and all other things for him. And whatsoever love be not referred to that end, namely, to the good pleasure of God, is a very vain and unfruitful love. And whatsoever love we bear to any creature whereby we love God the less, that love is a loathesome love and hinders us from heaven... Now, since our Lord has so loved us, for our salvation, let us diligently call for his grace that in return for his great love we be not found ungrateful.

St Paternus, Bishop (5th century)

(c. 482 - c. 550)

        St. Paternus was born at Poitiers, about the year 482. His father, Patranus, with the consent of his wife, went into Ireland, where he ended his days in holy solitude. Paternus, fired by his example, embraced a monastic life in the abbey of Marnes. After some time, burning with a desire of attaining to the perfection of Christian virtue, he passed over to Wales, and in Cardiganshire founded a monastery called Llan-patern-vaur, or the church of the great Paternus.

        He made a visit to his father in Ireland, but being called back to his monastery of Marnes, he soon after retired with St. Scubilion, a monk of that house, and embraced an austere anchoretical life in the forests of Scicy, in the diocese of Coutances, near the sea, having first obtained leave of the bishop and of the lord of the place. This desert, which was then of great extent, but which has been since gradually gained upon by the sea, was anciently in great request among the Druids. St. Paternus converted to the faith the idolaters of that and many neighboring parts, as far as Bayeux, and prevailed upon them to demolish a pagan temple in this desert, which was held in great veneration by the ancient Gauls.

        In his old age he was consecrated Bishop of Avranches by Germanus, Bishop of Rouen. Some false brethren having created a division of opinion among the bishops of the province with respect to St. Paternus, he preferred retiring rather than to afford any ground for dissension, and, after governing his diocese for thirteen years, he withdrew to a solitude in France, and there ended his days about the year 550.

Viernes de la V Semana de Cuaresma

Libro de Jeremías 20,10-13. 
Oía los rumores de la gente: "¡Terror por todas partes! ¡Denúncienlo! ¡Sí, lo denunciaremos!". Hasta mis amigos más íntimos acechaban mi caída: "Tal vez se lo pueda seducir; prevaleceremos sobre él y nos tomaremos nuestra venganza".
Pero el Señor está conmigo como un guerrero temible: por eso mis perseguidores tropezarán y no podrán prevalecer; se avergonzarán de su fracaso, será una confusión eterna, inolvidable.
Señor de los ejércitos, que examinas al justo, que ves las entrañas y el corazón, ¡que yo vea tu venganza sobre ellos!, porque a ti he encomendado mi causa.
¡Canten al Señor, alaben al Señor, porque él libró la vida del indigente del poder de los malhechores!

Salmo 18(17),2-3.4.5-6.7. 
Dijo: Yo te amo, Señor, mi fuerza,
Señor, mi Roca, mi fortaleza y mi libertador, mi Dios, el peñasco en que me refugio, mi escudo, mi fuerza salvadora, mi baluarte.
Invoqué al Señor, que es digno de alabanza y quedé a salvo de mis enemigos.
Las olas de la Muerte me envolvieron, me aterraron los torrentes devastadores,

me cercaron los lazos del Abismo, las redes de la Muerte llegaron hasta mí.
Pero en mi angustia invoqué al Señor, grité a mi Dios pidiendo auxilio, y él escuchó mi voz desde su Templo, mi grito llegó hasta sus oídos.

Evangelio según San Juan 10,31-42. 
Los judíos tomaron piedras para apedrearlo.
Entonces Jesús dijo: "Les hice ver muchas obras buenas que vienen del Padre; ¿Por cuál de ellas me quieren apedrear?".
Los judíos le respondieron: "No queremos apedrearte por ninguna obra buena, sino porque blasfemas, ya que, siendo hombre, te haces Dios".
Jesús les respondió: "¿No está escrito en la Ley: Yo dije: Ustedes son dioses?
Si la Ley llama dioses a los que Dios dirigió su Palabra -y la Escritura no puede ser anulada-
¿Cómo dicen: 'Tú blasfemas', a quien el Padre santificó y envió al mundo, porque dijo: "Yo soy Hijo de Dios"?
Si no hago las obras de mi Padre, no me crean;
pero si las hago, crean en las obras, aunque no me crean a mí. Así reconocerán y sabrán que el Padre está en mí y yo en el Padre".
Ellos intentaron nuevamente detenerlo, pero él se les escapó de las manos.
Jesús volvió a ir al otro lado del Jordán, al lugar donde Juan había bautizado, y se quedó allí.
Muchos fueron a verlo, y la gente decía: "Juan no ha hecho ningún signo, pero todo lo que dijo de este hombre era verdad".
Y en ese lugar muchos creyeron en él.

Cristo da la vida por sus enemigos

     Meditemos profundamente sobre el amor de Cristo nuestro Salvador, "que ha amado a los suyos hasta el extremo" (Jn 13,1), hasta el punto que por su bien, voluntariamente, sufrió una muerte dolorosa y manifestó el máximo grado de amor que puede existir. Pues Él mismo dijo: "No hay amor más grande que el que da su vida por sus amigos" (Jn 15:13). Sí, este es el amor más grande que jamás se haya demostrado. Y sin embargo, nuestro Salvador nos dio uno mayor por que dio esta prueba de amor igual para sus amigos y sus enemigos.

     ¡Qué diferencia entre este verdadero amor y otras formas de amor falso e inconsistente que pueden encontrarse en este pobre mundo!... ¿Quién puede estar seguro, en la adversidad, de  mantener a muchos de sus amigos, cuando nuestro Salvador, cuando fue arrestado, permaneció solo, abandonado de los suyos? ¿Cuándo tú te vayas, quién querrá ir contigo? ¿Si fueras rey, tu reino no te dejaría partir sólo para olvidarte tan pronto? ¿Incluso tu familia no te dejaría marchar, como una pobre alma abandonada que no sabe a dónde ir?

     Así pues, aprendamos a amar en todo momento, como deberíamos amar: a Dios sobre todas las cosas y a todas las otras cosas a por Él. Por que cada amor que no nos lleva a este fin, es decir, a la voluntad de Dios es un amor vano y estéril. Todo amor que dirigimos a un ser creado y que debilita nuestro amor hacia Dios, es un amor detestable y un obstáculo en nuestro camino hacia el cielo ... Así que, como nuestro Señor nos ha amado tanto para nuestra salvación, imploremos asiduamente su gracia, temiendo que en comparación con su gran amor, a nosotros se nos encuentre repletos de ingratitud.

viernes 15 Abril 2011 San Marón Se lo  considera, como uno de los primeros evangelizadores de la región de Fenicia, que por aquel entonces –s. IV- conservaba sus ritos y religión pagana; la influencia de este gran asceta dio como resultado, el que sus discípulos fundaran tiempo después, verdaderos enclaves de evangelización en Monte Líbano. Marón siguió a Dios con una fe a toda prueba, por lo que su fama de santidad pronto se extendió por gran parte de la región de Siria. Tuvo en vida numerosos seguidores que quisieron abrazar la vida de austeridad, soledad y oración, que él proponía. San Marón nació en Siria; hombre sencillo, que un día oyó la voz de Dios, aceptando inmediatamente el reto que significaba seguirle. Marón, no solo fue ejemplo, sino que además fue para aquellos hombres un líder lleno de sabiduría y del Espíritu santo, que supo dar sentido a cada acción, con disciplina rigurosa. Alcanzó en vida, fama de santidad en incluso realizó milagros de curación y conversión. Sus virtudes fueron ampliamente conocidas: justicia, castidad, templanza y duro trabajo, semillas que él mismo plantó en otros, quienes se convirtieron en el campo fértil, que llevó a Dios numerosas vocaciones, que serían tiempo después labradores diligentes y sabios, que harían florecer la Montaña de Líbano en la fe sólida y verdadera de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. San Marón dejó esta vida, después de corta enfermedad, sin embargo, él vive hasta el día de hoy en todos y cada uno de los que pertenecen a la Iglesia Maronita. Su cuerpo desapareció - aunque se sabe que parte de su cráneo se encuentra en la catedral de Foligno - pero su espíritu y su alma viven, para animar ese jardín de virtudes excelsas que él plantó. Que San Marón conceda con su intercesión a todos, continuar fieles a su legado de fe y amor que un día hizo brillar para Cristo las montañas de medio oriente. De este gran santo, y de la escuela de espiritualidad que él fundó, toma su nombre el Maronismo. Oremos Confesamos,Señor, que sólo tú eres santo y que sin ti nadie es bueno, y humildemente te pedimos que la intercesión de San Marón venga en nuestra ayuda para que de tal forma vivamos en el mundo que merezcamos llegar a la contemplación de tu gloria. Por nuestro Señor Jesucristo, tu Hijo.
